About Emma...

I’ve spent my career helping charities, funders and programmes surface what matters and turn insight into action. My skills sits somewhere between strategist, facilitator and researcher.

I like methods that help people think clearly, talk openly and make better decisions. At SocialQual, my aim is to help organisations understand what’s really going on, to build learning practices that stick and to leave people feeling more confident, not more confused.

Mission (what we do to create the world we want to see):  High-quality qualitative research and structured facilitation, I help organisations ask the difficult questions, listen deeply and turn insight into practical shifts.

About My Values...

I've been working on my own values recently. My values are Love and Balance. I am committed to doing more than plonking them on my website. I am acknowledging that my values are a journey, a practice. Living into some of these values comes naturally. In some cases it feels tough.

Here is where I'm at with considering my values in the context of my work:

Blue Squirl.png

1. Compassion and empathy

Recognising that emotions and feelings are part of the work. I commit to being sensitive, acknowledging and using emotion to better understand people’s experiences and build better futures.

2. Bravery

Part of learning will inevitably lead to tough moments and brave conversations. This means that we are doing it right. I want to support myself and my partners to ask brave questions and stay curious about the answers. Mistakes are ok and if I’m not making mistakes, I’m not growing – I would like to encourage this with the people I work with too.

3. Boundaries

I want to work with partners who seek to understand and respect the boundaries of their communities and colleagues. I commit to understanding and respecting boundaries of people I work with.

4. Glow

I want to create joy through the way I work, the methods I use and the changes I make. Good work makes me glow. I want to see my clients glow too.

Insight illumination – turning complex data sets into clear visual representations

My mission is to help organisations to visualise their data and transform it into valuable intelligence.  I love using Tableau to help people see and understand their data.  To save them time, engage their audience and improve their business performance.

I love working with a wide range of clients across different sectors on some fascinating research projects.  Especially if we get to tell some interesting data stories that help improve their decision making.  Or design an interactive dashboard, which allows them to explore their data in more depth with ease.

I am the Director of Datawoj Ltd. based in Chester, NW England.  I offer expertise and capacity in research data analysis and visualisation, aimed at delivering actionable insights.

Engaging with children and young people - using fun and innovative methods

I am an experienced freelance qualitative researcher with over 15 years’ experience using multiple qualitative methods in the areas of health, mental health and education. My work has focused on children, young people and other vulnerable groups and across academic, charity and private sectors. I spent 11 years at the Institute of Child Health at UCL conducting a number of studies including a part-time PhD exploring quality of life in children with high-risk brain tumours. I love that no two days are the same in research, one day I could be analysing data from an online focus group with clinicians and the next day I could be speaking to an 8 year old about their ideal classroom! I am passionate about giving a voice to children in research and finding fun and innovative ways of doing this.

Guiding businesses and non profits to maximise their positive impact

I am a Social Impact Measurement Consultant and the founder of Social Impact Reporting, a consultancy that provides practical impact measurement and reporting services. I work with businesses and nonprofits to track and measure the social impact they create. I believe that impact measurement is crucial to understanding the benefits of our social impact work beyond our good intentions. Success ultimately depends on the end beneficiaries, and so their perspectives are necessary to understand the scale of change. I enjoy this work because it is challenging and complex, and the data collected can help to improve how we create a positive impact in the future.

Combining deep empathy with academic rigour

Hi, I’m Katy Schnitzler and I am the founder of MIST Workshops Ltd. At MIST, we provide bespoke training, policy writing, research and support for organisations on the topics of pregnancy loss, infertility and childlessness. MIST’s work is academically-informed by my PhD research, which I am pursuing alongside. I am deeply passionate about challenging the taboos surrounding reproductive issues and childlessness in the workplace, and society more broadly. The most enjoyable aspect of my job is receiving feedback from countless individuals telling me how my work has positively impacted on their life, and how they feel validated - it is truly moving. I have had the pleasure to work with various organisations to improve practice in these prevalent and significant, yet often overlooked areas - including global energy and financial companies, universities, CIPD, Premier League Football Clubs and The NHS. I am delighted to work alongside Emma at SocialQual to help organisations to gain deep insights into the effectiveness of their practices.

Converging methods and processes to enhance access and impact

I aim to make a positive difference in whatever I do. Whilst this may not be the easiest next step, it is ideally the most effective medium to the longer term. I value integrity, courage, creativity and collaboration and intend for this to be part of my ways of being and doing.

Over 25 years of working I have been instrumental in providing timely research, project and event development, and management whilst integrating monitoring and evaluation at the outset.  I initiated a more measurable and operational equality, diversity, and inclusion strategic action plan process across an organisation. This was developed from recommendations of an internal Theory of Change (ToC) I had initiated. I have skillfully ingrategrated ToC with Action Learning Sets, alongside specialist support for Disabilities.

I am committed to developing evaluations - whilst words and reports are invaluable, I’m also keen to further explore and utilise creative tools for access, process,  impact, and maybe some serious fun!

Over 20 years experience guiding charities and funders to enhance their paths to meaningful change

Hi, I'm Shehnaaz Taking time to meet people where there are, I help charities and funders improve their impact practice.

A bit like a taxi driver, I've been down many of the impact and evaluation roads before, experienced the potholes, and been on diversions! I enjoy understanding where a charity or funder is in their impact practice and where they want to get to, and then together we can create the road map (a.k.a Theory of Change), set out the M&E framework, create the quant and qual tools to collect evidence which we can analyse and report on so that we learn and improve next time round.

For over 20 years I've worked alongside a range of UK charities and funders, trusts and foundations to plan-do-assess-review (the Inspiring Impact good impact practice cycle). I was Lead Consultant in NCVO's impact team until 2021 and have been freelancing ever since.

I recently founded T.O.O.T Services Ltd -- a niche service to help social impact businesses to gather testimonials and social proof.

Dr. Laura Batatota

“Too often we focus on what works, without paying attention to the how’s and whys.”

Laura started out in impact and research in 2009 when she began working for an outreach project in London. Since then, she has gone on to work in the not-for-profit, international development, and local government sectors, working with a range of organisations and communities.

Laura’s professional and lived experience has shaped her approach - exploring why and how change takes place, and connecting the dots along the way. She applies a decolonial lens to her practice by interrogating evaluation and research methods, whilst acknowledging the often-oppressive systems and structures which form our contexts. She frames her practice through a social justice lens, which has allowed her to be a learning partner through her work.

Laura’s has led on a range of projects – be it supporting a grassroots organisation just starting their journey to understand and better evidence their impact, to conducting large scale evaluations on behaviour change in an international context. She is deeply interested in understanding the role that contexts and ecosystems play in how we understand the world, and in turn, how we use these insights to make changes at a grassroots level.
